What age should you sell your baby goats?

This is a question that I asked a lot as well when we were really new to raising goats, but it isn’t just about age; it also matters a lot about how much they weigh. Baby goats, if not a healthy weight for their size, and if they aren’t eating good enough food, they can be very susceptible to things like coccidiosis, which can be detrimental to their health if not treated quickly.

Our general rule (which is what we learned from Deborah Nimenn) is to wait until your kids are 2 months old or 8 weeks, and at least 20 pounds. This is what we do for our dam-raised kids. If you are bottle feeding, you probably won’t have to wait as long since the kids would be eating from the bottle. But if you are dam raising, then you should wait until they are at least 20 pounds and 2 months of age; if they are 20 pounds but not yet 2 months, then wait for them to be 20 pounds or vice versa.

The reasoning being: That they are old enough to be weaned at that point, and that 20 pounds is a good range to have your young goats at especily when they are moving to a new place where they might be pushed around by older kids and not able to eat as much, but also insures that they can grow enough in that period.
